A foot valve, which is positioned at the end of a pump suction line, is also known as a one-way valve. This end will remain submerged and maintain the pump’s prime. When the pump is running, the foot valve allows water to flow in one way.   When the pump is shut off, it prevents water from flowing back. Therefore the pump stays primed for the next time it’s used.
